Folks here are a few pics we clicked on our way from Srinagar to Wusan

They dont call it paradise for nothing...

# Gulmarg (or "Meadow of Flowers") is a town, a hill station and a notified area committee in Baramula district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

# Gulmarg is located 52 km from Srinagar. It has an average elevation of 2,690 m (8,825 ft).

# The surrounding areas were politically restive during the 1990s uprising in Kashmir, but since a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 2003, the town has enjoyed a period of relative peace and quiet.

# With the abatement of militancy in the area, Gulmarg has quickly become one of the state's most visited destinations.

# The slopes of the Afarwat Hills of the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalaya Chain boast one of the longest and highest ski slopes in Asia.

# The total distance covered by ski lifts is five kilometres and the resort peaks at an altitude of 3,747 m (12,293 ft), accessed by an aerial gondola (telecabine).

On the way to the valley the scenes are remarkable.. the green, misty, foggy slopes dont allow the passenger to sleep on the journey... its like you just want to keep looking out... !!!! :)

A great piece of news in the newspapers today :

LAKHIMPUR: In a good news for wildlife enthusiasts concerned over dwindling big cat population in the country, at least 15 tiger cubs have been sighted in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

Not only that, the survival rate of the cubs has also increased, they said.

“At least 15 tiger cubs have been sighted at various spots of the park,” Shailesh Prasad, field director of the Dudhwa reserve in Kheri district, said.

He said a tigress with three cubs was sighted in Madraicha while Chhota Palia, Chaltua, Kakraha, Puraina and Jhadi Tal areas of the national park and Sadar beat of Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary (KWS) were reported to have tigresses with two cubs respectively.

He also said, “a tigress with one cub was reported to be staying in Trans-Gerua area of KWS.”

“All the cubs were hale and hearty, which indicated a sustained growth of tiger family in Dudhwa despite several odds,” he added.

However, if the arrival of new members in the tiger families has rejuvenated the wildlife lovers, this has also left them seriously concerned as Dudhwa with an area of nearly 1400 sq kms is nearly saturated with tiger population.

Monsoons have always been my favourite season. I have said it time and again the whole of India becomes much more beautiful in the monsoons. The green blanket, the wet weather, the clean-green leaves, the enthusiastic birds chirping, the sheltering animals, the small brooks, the endless waterfalls, the smell of the wet soil its total bliss... !!!

These pictures were taken on a trip to the south Gujarat forests in the second half of August. Wonderful trip where we had one extremely memorable night where it poured like there was no tomorrow... getting drenched in that cold rain in the midnight was a highlight of that trip !!!

These pictures were taken on a recent visit to Dabkhal, a remote place in Kaprada Taluka of Valsad District. The place is blessed with lots of greenery, waterfalls and ravines. Leopards and deers are also sighted as they said but we had no such luck..

Sunday Trek - Mehndi Kund

Last sunday 13th September we went for a trek to a fall called Mehndi Kund... about 60 kms from Indore... near Mhow Cantontment... a lovely fall ....

The whole area wore a green look thanks to the monsoons... however this particular day the sun chose to shine at its peak to help up trek... and keep the enthusiasm up... !!!!! :P :P

This is Choral River... that flows very scantily as a Dam stops most of the water... Dams are destroying rivers is what everyone says... I somehow slowly am starting to agree... are Dams really desirable in the long run ??? phew....

This trek was about 14 kms in all... for me it was great to see my son walk the entire distance... without asking to be lifted once... in this simmering heat... He just loved being in the green and it was great fun over all... !!!!

Finall the first glimpse of the waterfall... its a 200 feet fall... and falls very ferociously while spraying a lot of water around... almost impossible to click a pic from somewhere near... !!!!

And once you had that spray of water on yourself... you didnt want to click any more photo's... all you wanted was to just rush in the fall... sit there and have a shower... !!!! The heat ensured that no one felt the water was cold... it was a terrific experience... !!!!!

How many such hidden treasures does India have huh !! ????

This is Karjan Reservoir, its one heck of a place to sit and have a picnic... the slopes are all green in monsoons... its a place to actually sit and sooota lagao... !!!

a really tranquil place and very few people in the interior of Bharuch, we have some lovely interiors and they become very beautiful in monsoons.

Our Bolero has just reached Pangong TSO, Tso is ladakhi word for lake. This pic was taken in June 2006 trip to Ladakh. This lake is situated at a height of approx 4250 Metres. Interestingly one third water belongs to India and two thrids of this Lake belong to China !!! In Winter it freezes completely despite being Salt Water. More Pictures and More information and interesting facets of our journey to follow. Stay tuned.

This is a mountain near Rangdum. Doesn't have any particular name, amazingly. It is located midway between Kargil and Padum. In its vicinity is a monastery called Rangdum Gompa. Ourselves surprised it came out so well....

Tsokar Lake is approximately 45 km northwest of the Tsomoriri Lake at a height of 4,485 m. It is also called "White Lake" because of the salt deposited around it. This is because there is no outlet from the lake which makes the water brackish. The water of Tsokar is so salty that salt is taken from its banks and sold all over Ladakh and Kashmir by the local nomads known as the Rupsu Chang. All the lakes are breeding grounds for a variety of birds among them the bar-headed goose, the great crested grebe, the brahmin duck and the brown headed gull.

In the coming days will post a few pictures of this lake.

Drass is a tiny town in the Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is often called 'The Gateway to Ladakh'. The town, reportedly the second coldest inhabited town in the world shot into prominence in the summer of 1999 following Pakistani backed incursions into the Jammu and Kashmir. The Kargil War saw the town being shelled by infiltrators and the war ended with Indian Army recapturing the areas surrounding the town and the kargil district. Nigam and 3rd Eye were there in June 2006.

Ribba(3745m): Ribba or Rirang is another large populous village situated between the villages of Purbani and Rispa. In the local dialect ri stands for Chilgoza and rang means a peak of mountain.This village is situated on the northern flank of the lofty Kinner Kailash group. Its surroundings are full of the trees of edible pine.This as well as another village Rispa are known for their grapes orchards and the alcohol famous grape distilled from the vineyards of Ribba. So come here to intoxicate yourself with lots of vine !!

This is jogini falls in Bahang at the outskirts of Manali, a lovely green grassy trek, with loads of wild roses on the route. You walk from behind the water fall. We trekked this last year with kids of 10th Standard. A few brave boys even decided to get wet in the chilling water !!!!

Monsoon SKY of MALANA. The Hidden Kingdom. On the trek from Zari to Malana. This is where the Malana cream comes from :-). No wonder the place is so intoxicating. Himachal Pradesh.

Kinnaur Kailash - III

When the clouds cleared some what, the location offered a panoramic view of the Kinnaur Kailash. If you carefully see in the middle, you can see a small rock formation, it is a 79 ft rock formation that resembles the Shivalinga.

Many Kinnauri people visit this very high altitude SPIRITUAL place during mela. Even trekkers might find it difficult to reach at this height, but such is the belief in God that even the elder local folks reach the place.

The Kinnaur Kailash (locally known as Kinner Kailash) is a mountain in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. The Kinnaur Kailash has a height of 6050 meters and is considered as sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist Kinnauris. The pass is accessible on the trek is the Charang La at an altitude of 5300m.

It is a place where you can sit the whole day and get different photographs every hour !!!!

This picture was taken early in the morning in June 2007. Will share more pics of this beautiful mountain in the days to come...

Chatterings !!

Rajasthan sky at 6.00 am, at Ranakpur. At dawn these two monkey's were caught chattering with a clear sky behind them. Perhaps discussing the day's plan, plotting on which orchard to loot !! Trekking

This sunday we went trekking, my son actually walked all the way himself till the top small fort that you can see on the top. This trail once used to be frequented by leopards, deers etc. Now only a few birds frequent the trail. It is nicely left alone by the authorities and the public has been sensible enough not to litter.

I particularly like the pic of my son walking off in the wilderness !!
